Good thing Canada is a welcoming nation, many nationals from certain countries do not need a visa to enter, which means you could be visa-exempt. But, your passport is not the only thing you’ll need. If you’re a traveller from a visa-exempt country, you may need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). As with many immigration laws, there are exemptions. Travellers who do not need an eTA can include: Canadian citizens and permanent residents, USA citizens and/or visa-exempt travellers entering by land or sea.

WHY DO I NEED AN ETA?

The eTA was established to help improve the safety of Canadians by allowing officials assess traveller’s admissibility before they board their flight. This way, inadmissible travellers will not be shocked at a Canadian port of entry. Travellers will have their pre-screen checked and confirmed before they step foot on that plane.

HOW DO I GET AN ETA?

The process to obtain your eTA is done online through the Canadian government’s website. The cost is CAD $7 and could take minutes to complete. Your eTA can be valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires.
