Become a Canadian Citizen

It’s about time. You’ve had that PR status for a while now, and you are tired of the PR card renewals and residency obligations. Every year, thousands take the oath and pride themselves of becoming a Canadian citizen. Maybe it’s just laziness or the uncertainty of the application process, but the procrastination ends now, it’s time to get your citizenship.

    ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

Where do you start? First off, like any other case, you will need to figure out your eligibility.  One of the main requirements includes being physically present in Canada for three out of five years before applying for citizenship. Some ways to showcase this is to complete the online calculator and provide your Canadian income taxes. Keep in mind when calculating, you may count each day you were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident as a half-day towards your citizenship requirements, up to a maximum of 365 days.

      START STUDYING

Great, so your calculations are correct and you passed the residency requirements. But wait, there’s more (unless you are exempt). You may need to pass an English or French test to show your language proficiency – unless your are exempt. Organizations such as IELTS, CELPIP and TEF offer such tests which are approved by the government.

The language test is not the only test you’ll need to practice for, there may also the citizenship test. This consists of Canadian history, geography, political process and the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship. The test will usually take 30 minutes to complete. Additionally, some applicants might be asked to appear before a judge for an interview which could also take up to 30 minutes.

        THE CEREMONY

There are many other requirements and assessments you’ll need to undergo before you can confirm you qualify for citizenship and attend that citizenship ceremony. But once you’re there, you’ll receive your certificate of Canadian citizenship and officially become a Canadian!
